Didn’t quite get it? I’ll give you some examples…
Consider these words and their pronunciations:
- bread (short ‘e’ sound)
- beak (long ‘e’ sound)
- fear (‘ear’ sound)
- pearl (‘short ‘u’ sound)
Now, all the combinations of ‘ea’ have different sounds and pronunciation. Although the combination ‘ea’ is the same, but the sounds are different in all the 4 words.
Now, that sounds too confusing, isn’t it? Just imagine how confused your child would be…
Let’s look at another example…
- mail (ai sound)
- clay (ay sound)
- mate (a-e sound)
- sundae (ae sound)
- vein (ei sound)
- weight (eigh sound)
- grey (ey sound)
Did you know, there are 7 different ways to spell the ‘long a’ sound, each has a different combination though in the words given above? So same sound, but different combinations.
Consider this example here…
- cold (ol sound)
- rose (o-e sound)
- coat (oa sound)
- hoe (oe sound)
- snow (ow sound)
- dough (ough)
If you observe these words, there are 6 different ways of spelling the ‘long o’ sound… Same sound but different combinations.
This is just the tip of the iceberg!
There are a lot of such complex sounds and combinations in the English language, which a child needs to be equipped with, in order to have the required skills to read and spell any word that comes across.
Take a quick glance at some of the other complexities and you’ll understand what we are talking about:
- The bossy ‘r’ (ir, er, ur, or), which are the R-controlled vowels, that can represent different combinations but the same sound. For example: girl, fern, turn, actor
- The /s/ sound can be represented in 7 different spelling; i.e; sun, cycle, race, city, class, scent, raise.
- The combination ‘ou’ can be represented in 4 different sounds; i.e; bounce, shoulder, wound, sour.
- What is the voiced and unvoiced ‘th’ sound (them and thing)
- When to use /c/ and when to use /k/, when both the letters have the same sound?
- How about the long oo Vs short oo sounds? (cool Vs book)
- The long ‘u’ sound can be represented in 4 different combinations; i.e; mule, fuel, new, duty
- What is shwa?
- Soft c, Soft g, Silent e, long vowel sounds, silent letters, ending sounds, magical ‘u’, lazy ‘o’, lazy ‘i’ active ‘y’… just to mention a few…
Phew!!!! That was quite a bit, ah!
